Reasonable Education Demands Receive Unreasonable Response

"President Obama and Mr. Duncan have supported historic increases in school financing to stave off teacher layoffs while seeking to shake up public education with support for charter schools, the dismissal of ineffective teachers as a way of turning around failing schools, and other policies." The support of private competition and the elimination of poor teachers should not be controversial. Actually, it should not have taken until 2010 to enact such policies.
But Dennis Van Roekel, president of the union, the National Education Association, says this policy is "anti-educator, anti-union, (and) anti-student…" This is an example of more over-the-top rhetoric from the extremes of the political parties. It is time for all levels of government to be held accountable. Elected officials, government bureaucrats, and government unions must be held responsible for their performance and the performance of the organization that they represent.
As outlined in Right of Center America, this author believes that K-12 educators are grossly underpaid. They are adequately compensated, but not in a way that will attract the desired level of educators. Currently, teachers are provided with a fair salary with benefits that include a nine month work year, tenure or job guarantees, and state benefits including extremely low cost health care with a pension plan.
Right of Center America details a series of entitlement reforms and budget corrections to "right-size" the federal government. This would make funds available to pay down the debt, cut taxes, and invest in programs of vital importance. One of the most important national concerns is education. A series of reforms are proposed that include many of the same measures that the Obama administration is trying to enact. Because K-12 educators are underpaid and to help ensure that the proposed reforms will be enacted, a 50 percent pay increase is included. This would be dispersed by the federal government to teachers able to met strict, federal standards.
Like every administration, the Obama administration is focused on expanding the federal government to promote their agenda. And like every administration, it does not have the political will to cut any federal programs. Right of Center America illustrates what is possible by "right-sizing" the federal government from a right of center point of view. Education is one of many programs that could be reformed once funding is freed from federal gluttony.
